The Office of Indigenous Education and Engagement is a team of dedicated practitioners who develop community-based educational opportunities for students and support faculty to bring Indigenous ways of knowing and being into their classrooms. They serve as a resource and interface between indigenous communities and Vancouver Island University.
They lead with five guiding principles:
1. Teaching
We will hold space for our collective histories by sharing our authentic selves and respecting all our relations.
2. Knowing
We will practice self-reflection to honour and nurture our inner knowing to guide us responsibly.
3. Land
We acknowledge and give gratitude to the land and water as Medicine that teaches us we are all connected.
4. Sharing
We will trust the energy of thuy thut as we engage our hearts, minds and spirits.
5. Humour
We will encourage a source of humour, resiliency and strength.
